Financial Aid Application 101: For All the Seniors Out There!

Hey, Class of 2024!
Time is flying, and college deadlines are approaching fast! One thing you DON’T want to leave until the last minute is your **financial aid applications**. Whether you’ve been dreaming about your top schools since freshman year or still deciding, financial aid is KEY to making college happen—without all that stress later. So let’s break it down, step by step, and make sure you're covered!

1. FAFSA is Your Best Friend

  • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is your ticket to accessing federal grants, loans, and work-study programs. Get it in early—trust me, the money pool dries up fast! You’ll need your family’s tax info, so ask them to dig up those 2023 records ASAP.

2. CSS Profile: Don't Forget This!

  • Some colleges require the CSS Profile *in addition* to FAFSA. This one goes deeper into your financial situation, so it takes a bit longer to fill out. It’s offered through the College Board, so make sure you check which schools on your list need it.

3. Institutional Forms: Pay Attention to School-Specific Forms!

  • Did you know that some colleges have their own **institutional financial aid forms**? These are separate from FAFSA and CSS Profile and might ask for more specific details related to their own aid policies. Check your college’s financial aid page and submit any additional forms they need to process your aid package. It might seem like extra work, but it’s worth it to maximize your chances for aid!

4. Scholarships: Free Money is the Best Money

  • There are TONS of scholarships out there just waiting for YOU to apply. Some are need-based, but others are based on your skills, hobbies, or even random things like being left-handed! A little effort here can go a long way. Google some today and start filling out those apps!

5. Double-Check Deadlines

  • Each school has its own deadlines for financial aid, and these are sometimes earlier than the regular admission deadlines. Mark those dates down so you don’t miss out. Pro tip: Make your own deadline a week earlier to give yourself a cushion.

6. Contact Financial Aid Offices

  • If anything unclear, don’t be shy—reach out to your schools' financial aid offices! They can guide you on any forms or information you’re not sure about. The earlier you connect, the smoother your process will be.

Don’t let the stress of financial aid hold you back. Start early, stay organized, and take advantage of every opportunity. You’ve got this!
